2006 Frank Family Vineyards Winston Hill Proprietary Red Dec 2009

RP rating: 96 points

A blockbuster effort is the 2006 Winston Hill Proprietary Red (a 1,000-case blend of 91% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Petit Verdot, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc). Its deep purple color is followed by extraordinary, complex aromatics of sweet blueberries, chocolate, brown sugar, balsamic, flowers, and black tea. The wine hits the palate with stunning richness, layers of fruit, sweet tannin, and beautifully integrated wood, acidity, and alcohol. Readers should be keeping an eye out for this first-growth quality Napa red. It should evolve over two decades. I was impressed with the offerings from this winery off Larkmead Lane near Calistoga.

2007 Frank Family Vineyards Winston Hill Proprietary Red

Dec 2010

RP rating: 95+ points

The most expensive offering is the 2007 Winston Hill Proprietary Red. Dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon (86%) blended with Petit Verdot, Merlot and Cabernet Franc, production is just under 1,000 cases. The wine is more tightly wound than the Cabernets exhibiting a deep ruby/purple color and a restrained nose that is difficult to coax out of the glass. In the mouth, it reveals sweetness, full-bodied power, beautiful elegance and a sense of graciousness and restraint as well as plenty of flavor, intensity, power and full-bodied appeal. Still hiding much of its character, this 2007 should evolve for at least two decades.

2001 Frank Family Vineyards Winston Hill Proprietary Red

Retrospective Tasting

Jun 2011

RP rating: 94 points Drink: 2011 – 2031 The youngest and potentially finest effort is the 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon Winston Hill (also the most expensive). Classic notes of creme de cassis jump from the glass of this opaque purple-colored Cabernet. This beauty reveals outstanding purity and balance, a multidimensional mouthfeel, huge body and great fruit. This young but stunning 2001 should drink well for two more decades. Bravo!
